Il dolce far niente (the sweetness of doing nothing)

"Men are like wine. Some turn to vinegar,
but the best improve with age."

Pope John XXII

What's a man to do when he isn't playing golf, strumming a guitar or fixing things? Here are just a few of Jim's Italian activities.

The coffee culture is big over here. One thing that should be remembered - un caffe is priced accordingly; standing and drinking it at the counter cost you the least. If you sit at a table inside it will cost a little more, and if you sit outside the cost jumps again.

Whether in a hilltown or in the countryside, hiking is always a good choice for Jim. Here he is playing King of the Mountain. You climb it, you pee on it and it's yours.

Sightseeing - any day, any way. On the way to Deruta, (where they hand paint all those gorgeous ceramics) we couldn't pass up a good photo op. Those drop-dead red grape leaves were pretty to see from any curve on that country road.

Sometimes il dolce far niente grabs hold and one just has to surrender to it. Wine at lunch can enhance this effect.

Carry on, Jim!

Your trooper, Susan

Speaking about an Italian bar do you know that we have many different types of coffee that could be ordered?
    We have :
    caffè espresso
    caffè lungo
    caffè corto
    caffè corretto
    caffè macchiato caldo
    caffè macchiato freddo
    caffè marocchino
    caffè al vetro
    caffè americano
    Enjoy changing one every day

  2. Jacob stated very wisely that your statement about you climb, you pee on it and it's yours was true because once you pee on it.... nobody else would want it!!! From the mouths of babes. He may be claiming lots of Italian hills with this philosophy. Love you both, Georgia

  3. I am sitting here with a 20 oz cup of coffee from my new Keurig for .35c with a chill wind in sunny Florida reading an extraordinary book, "Jewish Pirates of the Carribean" while waiting for my wrist and ankle to heal.
And there you are pissing away your money at a coffee bar "outside" then claiming territory for Uncle Sam. Absolutely dreadful!

BTW, we are leaving for Jamaica, Monday where I hope to visit some areas found in the book. We are staying up in the hills of Montego Bay @'400 above the Carribean. Keep enjoying yourselves.

  4. What I love about Jim is his ability to adapt. I know it's been rough, but it's good to see he's settling in to the Italian life :o)
